Truck and Passenger Vehicle Crashes in Memphis

Semi-truck collisions remain some of the most devastating roadway incidents in Memphis and across Shelby County, especially near high-traffic corridors like I-55, an essential route for commercial freight, daily commuters, and long-distance travelers.

Interchanges such as the Brooks Road ramp frequently experience heavy merging, sudden braking, and congestion, all of which increase the likelihood of crashes between large trucks and passenger cars.

Shelby County records thousands of traffic accidents each year, with a significant percentage involving commercial vehicles. Common contributing factors include driver fatigue, wide turning maneuvers, large blind spots, and long stopping distances. These challenges can make it difficult for truck drivers to react quickly, particularly in fast-changing traffic conditions.

Even at moderate speeds, the sheer size and weight of a tractor-trailer can inflict severe damage on a car. Occupants may suffer head injuries, spinal trauma, broken bones, internal bleeding, and soft-tissue injuries. Some symptoms, such as dizziness, abdominal pain, or nerve issues, may take hours or days to appear, which is why immediate medical attention is crucial. In more serious cases, victims may face long-term mobility limitations, ongoing physical therapy, chronic pain, or extended time away from work.

Investigators typically review vehicle damage, skid marks, debris patterns, driver statements, and traffic camera or dashcam footage to determine what led to the crash. Because truck accidents often involve multiple potentially liable parties, such as the driver, trucking company, maintenance contractors, cargo loaders, or manufacturers, establishing fault can be far more complex than in standard car collisions. Insurance companies may also challenge injury claims or attempt to minimize payouts, creating additional stress for those injured.

Working with a skilled attorney familiar with truck accident cases can help victims protect their rights, preserve crucial evidence, and manage all communication with insurers. An attorney can also assist with claims for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, vehicle repairs, and future care needs.
