Ste. Genevieve, MO – School Bus Involved in Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on Hwy A Near I-55

Ste. Genevieve, MO (December 21, 2025) — A tragic multi-vehicle crash on Friday, December 19, left one person dead and several others injured. The collision, which involved a school bus, a semitruck, and two additional vehicles, occurred on Highway A just east of Interstate 55 shortly before 7:30 a.m.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a westbound semitruck stopped to allow a vehicle ahead to make a turn. A car traveling behind the semi then struck the rear of the truck. Moments later, another vehicle collided with the back of the car, causing it to spin into the eastbound lane, where it crashed head-on with an approaching school bus.

The driver of the car involved in the head-on collision was a 50-year-old woman and a staff member at Bloomsdale Elementary. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The school bus was identified as a special education transport vehicle for Ste. Genevieve Elementary School. Officials confirmed that multiple occupants were treated for injuries.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and school community mourning this loss. Our thoughts are also with those who were injured as they recover from this tragic event.

Crashes Involving School Buses in Ste. Genevieve

Highway A serves as a major route for commuters, school traffic, and commercial drivers. Morning hours can heighten risks due to congestion, frequent bus stops, and limited visibility on certain stretches of roadway. Heavy traffic near Interstate 55 can also add to the likelihood of sudden slowdowns and rear-end collisions.

School bus-related crashes, though statistically rare, can result in significant danger due to passengers being children or individuals with specialized needs. In Ste. Genevieve, the mix of commercial trucks and school transport vehicles along rural highways underscores the importance of maintaining safe following distances and anticipating sudden stops, especially near intersections and turn lanes. Extra caution is essential during early morning hours when drivers may be tired, rushing, or reacting to school schedules
