El problema de las infracciones por conducir en Acción de Gracias
The holiday season is supposed to be a time to come together and enjoy each other’s company, but for many, it is also a time of tragedy. To explain why we need to look at the problem with Thanksgiving DUIs.
Black Wednesday
Previously, we examined the shocking rate of DUIs on Independence Day, accounting for 2% of all annual DUIs. However, the 4th of July is not the top DUI holiday in the U.S. That title, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reserved for Thanksgiving eve, also called Black Wednesday. On this one day, there is a 68% increase in car crashes and a 38% increase in police alerts.
Not only that, NHTSA data suggests that 200 Americans lose their lives in drunk driving accidents each Black Wednesday. Put another way, roughly 1-in-15 DUI fatalities occur on the day before Thanksgiving.
Perhaps worst of all is that the victims of these fatalities are typically sober drivers who were struck by an intoxicated person. Drunk drivers tend to have a lower fatality rate as their bodies are relaxed and they don’t tense up at the moment of impact.
Safe Choices
Any drugs or alcohol will affect your ability to drive. If you intend to celebrate the holidays, make sure you either have a designated driver who will remain completely sober throughout the night or that you use ridesharing to get home safely.
Even BAC as low as 0.01% can affect your reaction times and decision-making, which is why it’s crucial to avoid getting behind the wheel altogether. Only through a concentrated effort and by actively preventing unsafe drivers from getting behind the wheel can we bring positive change and help everyone gets home safely to spend the holidays with their loved ones.
