Raymore, MO – Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on I-49 Near N Cass Pkwy & 195th St

Raymore, MO (October 23, 2025) – A deadly wrong-way crash shut down both directions of Interstate 49 near North Cass Parkway and 195th Street on October 21.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday. A 2022 GMC Savana was heading north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 49 when it hit a 2025 Freightliner Cascadia. The impact pushed the Cascadia into the side of a 1992 Peterbilt 379.

The force of the crash sent all three vehicles into the median. Soon after, the Savana caught fire, which spread to the other two trucks.

The 42-year-old driver of the Savana, a man from Kansas City, died at the scene. The driver of the Cascadia, a 51-year-old man from Ames, suffered minor injuries. The 66-year-old driver of the Peterbilt, from Webb City, was not hurt.

Crews reopened both sides of the interstate by 8 p.m. that evening.

Authorities are still working to determine what caused the driver to travel the wrong way. The investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim and wish the injured driver a swift recovery.

Wrong-Way Crashes in Raymore, Missouri

Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents on Missouri highways. These collisions often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the high speeds and the head-on nature of the impact. In Raymore and surrounding areas, incidents like the recent wrong-way crash on I-49 highlight the tragic consequences such accidents can bring.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, wrong-way driving accidents account for only about 3% of crashes on divided highways, but they are far more likely to result in fatalities or catastrophic injuries. In many cases, wrong-way drivers are impaired, distracted, or confused by road signage or traffic patterns. Rural areas and interstates, such as I-49 in Cass County, can be particularly prone to this type of collision, especially during off-peak hours or in low-visibility conditions.

Victims of wrong-way accidents may suffer serious injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage, broken bones, burns, or internal injuries. Families who lose loved ones in these tragic events may be left with emotional devastation and unexpected financial burdens, including funeral costs, medical bills, and loss of income.

For grieving families, seeking legal guidance after a fatal wrong-way crash can be a critical step. A wrongful death attorney can help determine whether negligence played a role—such as driving under the influence, distraction, or failure to follow traffic laws. Families may be eligible for compensation related to medical expenses, funeral costs, lost income, and the loss of companionship.
